Ending of the placement

Endings are another of the twelve basic life situations identified by Butler and Elliott (1985). Their analysis of ending focuses on the feelings of mourning which stem from loss. It is likely that both the student and the practice teacher will feel some degree of loss at the end of the placement, particularly if they have enjoyed a close and constructive working relationship (Clow 1998). Both student and practice teacher may experience some disappointment at not having been able to achieve all they would have wished. The student is also likely to miss the other staff and probably some clients in the placement. However, other emotions also pertain at an ending: pleasure at the achievements of the placement, relief after a period of extra work and anticipation of the next phase. The practice teacher can help the student express their feelings and further equalise the relationship by expressing their own feelings. Rituals are also helpful at such times and many practice teachers and students organise some social event, often involving other members of the team.
